Plein Air Acrylic and Camaraderie

Hmmmm....please just turn your head....no time. Stilll unpacking + packing for Sapelo. All good things.

This photo was taken on a most rainy raw morn inside the Wood and Swink where Sue and Freddy Wood graciously allowed us to paint all toasty warm. It led to my personal paint out favorite painting. Canned Heat may be the title.

Bonnie Luria
asks about painting en plein air with acrylics in prep for her first plein air workshop and, brave girl, her first landscape!

As smart cooky and skilled painter, I'm sure she has been researching. Also see our comments on the previous post.

Bonnie, your instructor has probably suggested a palette of colors. If a local instructor, you are good to go. If not, you may want to include some specialty colors to depict your tropical water and flowers. A magenta or rose, a variety of reds and yellows, and a teal come to mind.

Plein air is the best, albeit most challenging, intro to landscape painting. Great for an experienced painter like yourself.

Camaraderie: Hah! Paintings falling jelly side down, your palette in your lap, bugs committing suicide on your painting. What more could you ask for?

We lined up our day's work across my mantle each night. We critiqued ourselves and each other. New eye see fast. One of us was sure to have the perfect frame for another's painting. (Paint outs require instant framing.) We traded quite a bit.

We shared wine (not whine) and the stories flowed.

p.s. I could have used a cad red deep for those peppers in dim light. Glazed later instead.
p.p.s. Cows are characters! Great stories.

Nancy- Thanks for the long dedication here to my plight. I can only imagine how tired you must be ( sideways peppers......)

I'm going to work small, listen, watch and try to have fun. I said try.
Every day is a different location and the teacher is not from here. We really have none- the few we do have are watercolorists which I'm not.

Maybe next year I'll convince you and or Linda to come to St Croix ( lovely, free accomodations..) to teach.
I love the way you treat palms.
I'd treat you just the same!

Bonnie, consider my arm twisted. I would love to come to St. Croix on many levels...not the least of which is getting to finally meet you!
