Epiphany! That's Dr. Leslie Hammond as the subject of Jack Thursby's painting entitled "Held Back by Art History."Since I studied with Jack for years and since I know Leslie, you would think my senior brain cells would have connected the dots long ago.
I had the pleasure of attending Dr. Leslie Hammond's recent presentation to the Visual Artists Society at CFCC in Ocala, FL.
Her topic was portfolios - from the ones artists used to lug around to the digital versions of today. She also provided important info on Florida's resources for artists.
My take-aways centered on art collectors and what they need to know about the artists they collect. This is at the core of her Artistic Eye services and website.
Because provenance is so important to the value of an artwork, serious collectors keep a file on the artists whose work they collect.
We artists should be providing a bio, statement, resume, and the individual artwork's provenance with the sale of our work. We should also be keeping our patrons updated on our events and additions to our resumes.
I have known Leslie since 2002 when she became curator at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala. It was she who curated my work into the 2006 Biennial Exhibit. Her expertise extends from fine arts to teaching to archeology. You can learn about her passions on her Artistic Eye website and links page.
* Dr. Hammond also works with artists on preparing their portfolios and critiquing websites.
** I am also in a Jack Thursby painting called "Cookie Cutters." You can see it on his website. I am the 4th from the left and cutting out paper dolls. All the people were fellow classmates.
